For FirstChair 1.0

Quickest help: email jimmy@junsoft.org and describe what happened, your iPhone model, and your iOS version. We read every message.

Getting started

  1. Open FirstChair and pick your instrument.
  2. Tap Start Practice. When iOS asks, allow microphone access — FirstChair needs it for live pitch analysis. Audio is never uploaded.
  3. Play a sustained note. The pitch ribbon shows how many cents you're above or below the target. The rhythm grid tracks how close to the beat you are.
  4. Tap Stop. Your session is saved locally and counted toward your weekly progress.
  5. On Sunday, open Progress and tap Send to Teacher to share the weekly summary.

Frequently asked

Why is my pitch reading "jumpy"?
Make sure the microphone is close to the instrument's bell or mouthpiece, that the room is reasonably quiet, and that no other audio sources are playing. Whistling or singing can produce ambiguous results — FirstChair is tuned for sustained wind-instrument tones.

Where do the exercises come from?
They are authored, public-domain-style long tones, scales, arpeggios, and chromatic runs in keys school bands use most often. FirstChair does not ship copyrighted sheet music.

Does the AI coach work offline?
Yes. On iOS 26 devices the coach uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models LLM. On older devices a deterministic rule-based coach takes over. Either way, no network call is made.

How do I manage or cancel FirstChair Plus?
Go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone. From there you can change plan, cancel, or restart a subscription. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period.

I bought Plus on another phone. How do I restore it?
On the paywall screen, tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID that made the original purchase.

Where is my data stored?
On your device, in the FirstChair app sandbox. Deleting the app removes everything. There is no cloud account to delete.
